Summer 2 week 4
This week in Apple class has been another busy one.
In our English we have been learning about how to write an information leaflet. We thought about the different types of sentences we might use and which punctuation marks we would use at the end of them. We thought about some different word classes that we would use such as time words and imperative verbs. At the end of the week we wrote our own leaflet about plants and how to look after them.
In Maths we have been learning all about division and sharing. We have been dividing by 2,5 and 10 and starting to look at the relationship between the division and multiplication number sentences.
In our Computing we have finished our fact files about Beatrix Potter and completed them with images on a word document.
In our Science learning we have started to look at seasonal changes and the structures of trees and how they change when the season do to.
Summer 2 week 3
We have had another busy week in Y1 Apple. We are loving our class text, 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit'.
This week in English we have been learning all about newspaper reports and the features of them such as headlines, witness statements and key events. We wrote reports about Peter rabbit stealing vegetables from Mr McGregor's garden. They are fantastic, you can see these in our books and on our classroom display!
In our Maths this week we have been learning all about directions and using prepositions. We started our learning in the hall showing different prepositions such as on, under, around, between. We then moved onto activities such as following mazes to find locations and giving each other directions. On Friday our arithmetic focus was on division and multiplication we concentrated on dividing by ten and then finding the inverse operations.
In our Science we completed a diagram of a flower to show the different parts and wrote sentences about their functions. These can also be seen in our books and some of these will also be on display in our classroom.
Summer 2 week 1
We have had a very busy first week back in Y1 Apple. Our story for this half term is, 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit' by Beatrix Potter. In our English this week we have been thinking about the characters and immersing ourselves in them. We have written character descriptions about Peter and Mr McGregor and thought about their appearance and their personality. We also started to use similies to make comparisons.
In Maths we have been recapping on our knowledge pf halves and quarters and we have been learning to half and quarter shapes and amounts.
In our Science this week we went on a learning walk around the school grounds on a hunt for wild flowers and garden flowers. We looked at their structures and saw if we could identify whether they were a garden or wild flower.
In our Art this week we began experimenting with sketching and improving our work with feedback. We started to sketch flowers in the style of Georgia O'Keeffe.
Summer 1 Week 6
This week in Y1 Apple we have had a very busy final week to the half term.
In our Maths learning we have been learning about weight and mass. We have been comparing different objects using heavy, light, heaviest, lightest. We then weighed objects using a on-standard measure and standard measures looking at g and kg.
In our English we have been editing the story of the Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch and writing our own versions using lots of adjectives and trying really hard to improve our handwriting. Come and look in our books at our lovely stories!
In our theme we have been completing our Art work in the style of Bridget Wilkinson using pastels. These will be on display in school very soon so keep a look out.
In History we compared seaside holidays form Victorian times to modern day holidays. We found some differences but we also found a lot of similarities.

Summer 1 Week 5
We have had a very busy week in Y1 Apple this week.
In our Maths learning we have continued our learning about money. We have been concentrating on coin recognition and adding coins together, subtracting money and finding different ways of making amounts.
In our English this week we have been using phase five sounds in our writing, we have been using question marks in our work and we have been writing instructions on how to make a healthy sandwich. We have been concentrating on the different types of words we need to include in them such as imperatives, adverbs and adjectives.
In our theme this week we have been learning about Carnivores, Herbivores and Omnivores and looking at their diet. We have also been looking at the differences between their teeth and how they help identify which category they belong to.
In our Geography we have been comparing physical and human features which are found in Sheffield and Whitby.
We have also been learning how to operate a programme in computing by using phonics play to help support our phonics learning.
In Art we have begun our pictures in the style of Bridget Wilkinson who sketches pictures of Whitby in a modern style and uses lots of bright colours to create her work.
Summer 1 week 4
This week in Y1 Apple has flown. We have enjoyed continuing our learning about the seaside and the Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch.
In English this week we have written a recount about our visit to Cleethorpes. We have also created a factfile on Lighthouses thinking about what they are for, what they look like and the history of them.
In our Maths we have started to look at money. We have been looking at the value of coins and notes and looking at using coins to make different amounts.
In our theme we have been learning about categorising animals by their diet and splitting them into groups of carnivores, omnivores and herbivores. We have also been looking at the human body and labelling the different parts of the body.
Summer 1 Week 3
This week in Y1 Apple we have had a very exciting week!
In our English writing we have been writing stories about a short film called, 'Lighthouse'. It was all about a Lighthouse keeper who looked after a lighthouse but it stopped working and whilst he was trying to fix it he dropped the light and it smashed. Then a boat was coming towards the lighthouse because it couldn't see so the villagers came with lanterns to help the lighthouse keeper so the boat could see. Children wrote their stories using adjectives to make their writing exciting.
In our Maths we started learning about capacity. We started looking at different words we could use to describe volume and capacity of objects such as half full, 3/4 full, empty. We then moved on to measuring them using non-standard methods such as cubes and standards measurements using ml.
In our theme we continued to sketch shells and add patterns to them in the style of Martin Harvey and on the laptops we were learning how to log on and open a programme on the computer. We used phonics play to practise our phonics.
On Friday we went on our trip to Cleethorpes. Whilst we were there we did some sketching of the landscape, we played team games, we made sandcastles, we played in the water and we had an ice cream it was lots of fun and we had a great day.
Summer 1 week 2
Y1 Apple have had another lovely and busy week.
In our English this week we have been concentrating on using capital letters for the names of people and places. We have used them for the days of the week, months of the year and for writing an address. We have also written a letter to Mrs Whittingham to ask her permission to go to Cleerthorpes to help Mrs Grinling from our story, The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch.
In our Maths we have been learning all about 3d shapes and their properties. We have been labeling the faces, vertices and edges and identifying the names of the 3d shapes by using these properties to help us. We have also been looking at solving some one step Maths problems using our knowledge.
In theme this week we have continued our use of computers to create a word document about the five animal groups we have been learning about. We have been comparing the structures of the five animal groups too and looking at what is the same and what is different. We have also began to use different grades of pencils to sketch shells and add patterns to them in the style of Martin Harvey's handwriting.
Summer 1 week 1
We have had a fantastic first week back in Apple class this week. Our new topic is Beside the seaside and we are using the book 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch' to use in our learning.
In Literacy this week we have been sequencing the story of The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch and writing a recount of events in the past tense and in first person pretending to be Mrs Grinling. Can you practice changing words from present to past tense?
In our Maths this week we have been learning about 2d shapes. We have learnt the names and properties of them so we can identify them. We learnt about corners, sides and their names. We also started to look at 3d shapes. We have been beginning to name them and starting to look at their properties. Have a look at the videos below to learn the names of some of the shapes.
In Science this week we have been learning to categorise animals into five group which are Mammals, Reptiles, Fish, Birds and Amphbians. We have been looking at their sturctures and comparing them to see how they can be categorised. In our Computing we have been learning how to use word and started to type a factfile on the five groups we used in science.
In Phonics we have been looking at all of the different graphemes that make an A sound such as ay for play, ai for train, a_e for cake, ey for prey. Keep practicing these at home and spotting them in different words.
Spring 2 Week 5
We have had a lovely last week for this half term. We have finished off our topic about magic and we have all graduated from the Wizard and Witches academy with flying colours.
We have been writing descriptive sentences this week about Winnie and Wilbur and thinking of different adjectives we could use in our sentences. We described their appearance and their personality.
In Maths we have been using what we have learnt about time to answer word problems. Maybe at home you could make a clock like we did at school and use it to help you to tell the time.
In our theme we have been making Easter eggs, Easter baskets and finishing off our hats and wands for our graduation.

Spring 2 Week 4
This week in our class we have had a very busy week. We have been set lots of challenges by Walter Wizard who is Winnie and Wilbur's friend. First he set us challenge to make a potion using the most disgusting ingredients we could think of to get rid of a dragon which had invaded his village.
Then we had to find which material Winnie could use to fix her umbrella because it had a whole in it. We tested four different materials to see which one would be the most suitable. We found out that the cellophane was the best as it was the most waterproof material.
In Maths this week we have been learning about time. We have been cocentrating on o clock and half past times.We made our own clock in Maths and then wrote instructions on how to make it in our English lesson. We had lots of fun making our own clocks.
Spring 2 Week 3
This week in our Literacy we have been learning about writing instructions. We have been using imperative verbs (bossy words), sequential words (time words) and using adjectives. We wrote instructions on how to make a potion called, A Witches Brew and we wrote instructions for how to make a flying carpet.
In Maths we have been using subtraction and addition methods to answer words problems. We have moved on to subtracting a two digit number from a two digit number. At the end of the week we have been finding the difference between different amounts.
In our theme we have been working scientifically and carried out two experiments. One where we levitated balloons using static energy. The other where we caused a reaction using bicarbonate of soda and vinegar to create bubbles. We made predictions, carried out the experiment and wrote up our conclusions.
Spring 1 Week 2
This week in Y1 Apple our learning has been focused around Winnie and Wilbur and the Amazing Pumpkin.
In our Literacy we have been editing the story and writing our own version of the book. We had a wide variety of stories from Winnie and the Stupendous Banana to Winnie and the Giant Rose. We really enjoyed making the stories into our own.
In Maths we have continued our Place Value learning and have been learning about part part whole and learning that we can get addition and subtraction number sentences just from three numbers. We have also been completing missing number sentences and using different techniques of filling in the numbers. Can you practice doing some part part whole questions at home?
In our Phonics we have been learning about alternative sounds for some phonemes such as the 'ea' grapheme makes different sounds in the words seaside and headache. Keep practicing and finding lots of different ways of making the same sound. Phonics play has lots of really good activities to help you practice your blending and segmenting. The link is on the bottom of the page.
In our theme we have been making Mother's Day cards using our hands and fingers to create an artistic design. We have also been making some of Winnie and Wilbur's favourite Pumpkin soup with cream. It was delicious.
Spring 2 week 1
Well, our first week back has been an interesting one as we have had a few days at home due to the snow but we have been very busy when we have been at school.
In our Maths we have been continuing our Place Value learning and we have been looking at splitting numbers into tens and ones, we have been comparing numbers and looking at which is the largest and smallest amount, we have also been adding one more, ten more and taking away one.
In English we have started our first story in this half term all about magic. We have been reading the story of Winnie the Witch and we have been learning to sequence events and write in the first person pretending to be Winnie.
In our theme we have been using charcoal to make sketches of Winnie's black house and looking at the different details on it such as the different shaped windows. We have also been creating a background for our pictures in the style of Claude Monet's, Starry Night. We learned about using colours to alter the shade of the blue and using circle shapes to create the round swirly pattern. They look amazing.

This week's Learning champion is Chanelle for an amazing newspaper report about Peter rabbit. Also for using beautiful handwriting and showing pride in her presentation.
This weeks Jigsaw Genius is Riley for being helpful around the classroom and being a fantastic buddy and helping others to learn and progress.
